Then we went out and picked some leaves to experiment with. First they had to crumple the leaves into the jar, and add some rubbing alcohol. The kids were tossing out ideas as to why we used rubbing alcohol instead of plain water, and some of them were right, the rubbing alcohol absorbs the chlorophyll. Then once we had our mixture the kids put their coffee filters into their jars and watched them soak up the color from their mixture.
Then we discussed Chlorophyll and what it is! Chlorophyll is a pigment that gives leaves their green color. All trees have chlorophyll because they need it to soak in sunlight for photosynthesis. They change color and fall off the tree because they contain water and would kill the tree during the winter if they didn’t, because they would freeze.
