Since the it is getting to be the time of the year when we start to need ways to cool down we decided to get some water play started. The kids helped put together this great splash pad! First they stretched out the tarps flat on the ground. Then each kiddo grabbed a pool noodle and rolled it underneath the edges of the tarp! Then it was time for some fun. We set the sprinkler up in the middle of the splash pad and the kids had a great time splashing and walking through the sprinkler!
Last week, one of our bear club kiddos introduced us to a delicious treat called Mufleta, also known as a Jewish pancake. They kind of look like a crepe when everything is done! They are super easy to make and super yummy! All you need is flour, salt, water, sugar and yeast! Once you have mixed all the ingredients you take a ball of dough and get it as flat as you can! Then you fry it on both sides and keep added different layers. After it is cooked, you top it with honey and a little sugar! The kids loved them!
Today at bear club we had a chance to get outside and enjoy the weather! The Kinder First and Second Graders got to play some Ice bowling. They each got a balloon filled with ice to try to roll down the playground and knock down all of the pins. Unfortunately the ice was way more fragile than they had thought and the ice bowling balls broke as they were rolling down the playground. By the time i made it outside with the camera, the only thing to take pictures of was the broken ice that the kids were playing with. The kids had a blast watching the ice melt!
Today at bear club the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders had a blast getting to experiment with what type of bubble gum would blow the best bubbles. The group talked about what the difference was between Chewing gum and Bubble Gum. Chewing gum base is a natural gum called chicle harvested from the sap of a tropical tree called a sopapilla tree. This kind of gum is chewy but it will not blow a large bubble. Bubble gum base, on the other hand, is a mixture of starches and polymers made in a laboratory and specially formulated to blow bubbles.
Then the kids looked at the difference with the incidence and then made a hypotheses. They all picked a bubble gum to blow the biggest bubbles. Then they had a chance to test out each type of gum. They rated it on how many pieces you needed, Flavor, and if you could blow a bubble.
The winner was the Hubba Bubba!
Here at Bear Club, we have a suggestion jar where the kids can put their ideas in it for a chance for them to be on the calendar. One of our kids had the AWESOME idea of making our own bubble tea! I would have never thought about it! These kids come up with the best ideas! So we went to Uwajimaya and bought strawberry terro powder, tapioca balls and blended it with ice and milk! To top it off we even got the kids bubble tea straws. It was such a hit the kids loved it! We will definitely be doing it again in the near future!
Sometimes is good to get back to the basics at bear club. This week the kids were having a blast with Lego's. They were making air planes, cars and other great gadgets and gizmos all out of Lego's. The kids were so excited to have their pictures taken with their amazing creations. We even had a few car races to see who’s Lego derby car was the fastest. I think the kids found a great way to change something that they play with all the time into something spectacular!
This month is we decided to go Green at Bear Club! What a better way than having the kids make their own compost bin for the bear club Garden! While we were working away on decorating the Compost bin we talked about how we were using the 3 R's of being green, Reduce, Recycle and Reuse! The kids had a blast helping poke holes in the bottom of the bin for drainage, but they were most interested in the worms! We used Red Wigglers, these worms are commonly used to break down organic molecules in compost and decaying matter. There were a few shrieks when they were putting them in the bin, but they loved watching them dig around. We also spoke about what does and does not go into a compost bin because we want to make sure the worms stay healthy and happy!
Yesterday at bear club the 3-5th Graders had a chance to try their skills as engineers. They were given a few different supplies to work with. Popsicle Sticks, Binder Clips and some Clothes pins. They were given 45 minutes to come up with a structure that would hold a maximum number of books. We had a lot of great structures and some of them were very creative. The winner was Miles with a total of 14 books that he could stack on his structure!
Yesterday, Club 54 kiddos participated in a selfie challenge. For those of you who don't know what a selfie is its a picture where you are holding the phone, camera, or in our case the iPad and take a picture of yourself using the front facing camera! Since it was so nice yesterday afternoon, we walked around the campus and took selfies, anywhere on campus was game. The kids got to pick their locations. One was the staff lounge, on a rock, under the bridge by the library and a few others. All the pictures were so great, these kids got so creative and took some seriously silly pictures as well as picture that were model status! CHECK THEM OUT!!!!
I don't think i have ever seen the kids so excited to make something at bear club! They were so excited to make their unicorn hot Cocoa, that they couldn't wait to get started. They each helped pick out the lucky charm marshmallows, poor in their milk and add their white chocolate to the pot. The kids helped stir the mixture until it was all melted and warm. Then they made the Unicorn whipped cream! they started by measuring in the whipping cream, and the vanilla and then we all took turns stirring the cream until it became fluffy! finally we added the colors to make it look Magical! many of the kids were so excited to see that their cocoa was purple! They had a great time puting on the toppings to make it look like a Magical cup of Yummy white chocolate goodness!
